This is the first pub you come to when arriving in Menindee from the south west, and for riders, it’s easily the better of the pubs in town.

Currently run by the very gregarious “Bungy” who’s had it for 13 years but is leaving in mid 2015 to return to Broken Hill and his family. We can only hope the next manager is as friendly and accommodating.

This place was first opened in 1853 and claims to be the 2nd longest continually operating pub in NSW. Either Burke or Wills stayed here whilst the rest of their expedition camped by the river during their hopeless expedition to the north. There is a marked surveyor’s pole on the wall of the bar

Bungy’s mother in law is a Maiden and so the pub has been in Maiden family hands since the 1890’s

The ‘locals’ seem to be mainly crew from the local river diversion works who work permanent day or night shifts and everyone in the bar and town are friendly.

We parked our bikes inside the courtyard of the pub did our washing in the well equipped and clean bathrooms. It was all easily dry in the morning.

The restaurant serves meals every day but even given the distance, the food’s not real cheap with our chicken parmies not huge but still costing 25 bucks. A schooner will set you back five.

Our twin room cost $65.00 and there is no discount for single occupancy which is a bitch but still very good value if you are travelling with a mate and out here you should be!

The room had full reverse cycle air con and the beds sure rested our buggered bones. Unless you particularly want to camp out by the lakes, this is a great option.
